Toor dal amti is a popular maharashtrian toor dal amti recipe which is made almost daily in our home. It can be spicy or sweet as per individual taste. It is also called pigeon pea lentils / arhar dal amti.

This Maharashtrian Toor Dal Amti recipe, which I have learned from my grandmother and this is very special method which you might not seen in other recipes.

 

I have used Methya in tadka. Methya is a seeds of fenugreek plants. Addition of methya adds savoury taste to our amti.

 

You might have also seen use of tamarind in Toor dal Amti, but here I have added jaggery in tamarind which will decrease sourness of amti. If you like sourness then you need not to add jaggery.

 

This recipe of Amti with toor dal is my personal favourite and I make it almost everyday.

I like to have it with JEERA RICE or of its own. Its tastes delicious!

Ingredients for Maharashtrian Toor dal amti


Main Ingredients
 ½ cup Toor Dal (pigeon pea lentils / arhar dal)
 1 chopped medium sized tomato
Ingredients for Tadka
 Methya (fenugreek seeds)
 Mustard, turmeric, hing,
 Blended cumin and coconut mixture
 Red spices,
 1 tbsp goda masala
 Tamarind, chopped coriander, jaggery, salt, curry leaves

How to make Maharashtrian Toor dal amti


Preparation for Toor Dal Amti
  1. Rinse Toor dal under water and add 1/2 and slightly mote water.
  2. Later add hing, turmeric and oil in it. And get 3 whistles in a cooker.
  3. After settling down cooker, take out cooked dal and add some water. Then mash it with stirrer or masher.
  4. Toor dal will become fine mashed.
Making Tamarind and Jaggery extract
  1. In a small bowl, take tamarind and jaggery with water. And let it soak for 15-20 minutes.
  2. After soaking well, mash mixture with hand or spoon and remove remained contents of tamarind.
Making Tadka for Toor Dal Amti
  1. Heat some oil in a frying pan. Add mustard and methya, currey leaves, little hing, turmeric.
  2. Now, add chopped tomato and just saute in a oil. Don't let it cook more.
  3. Then sprinkle Red spices, mixture of cumin and coconut along with goda masala. And mix it well.
Making Toor Dal Amti
  1. Pour mashed toor dal in our tadka. Add some water as you want the consistency of dal. I personally like little thin.
  2. Now, sprinkle some salt as per taste and pour extract of tamarind with jaggery
  3. Lets add some chopped coriander and mix it well.
  4. Then boil it in low flame for 5-6 minutes.
  5. After boiling switch off gas. Our tasty Toor dal amti is ready. Enjoy it with Rice or chapati. Or even you can have as its own.
